Meet Hirah: How Your Boarding Scholarship Brought Safety and Stability

Because of you, Hirah received a boarding school scholarship at Namatumba Junior School, gaining academic confidence and safety.

It’s back to school time! And for Hirah, a GVC boarding scholarship is making all the difference.

Hirah grew up in a very difficult environment with her father and stepmother. Her father was unemployed, which meant there were no resources for basic necessities. Compounding this struggle, her stepmother was cruel, making her home life increasingly unsafe.

Hirah desperately wanted to learn. She tried to attend the local school, but she was frequently sent home because her family couldn’t afford to pay her fees. With her home life becoming increasingly unsafe, she finally left and went to stay with her uncle. But without a stable source of income, she remained out of school, her dreams on hold.

Finding a sanctuary in the school dorms

Everything changed when Global Village Connect awarded Hirah a comprehensive boarding scholarship.

This scholarship covered more than just her tuition; it enabled her to move directly into the school dormitory. At school, she found a level of safety and stability she had never known in her childhood.

When she first arrived, her teachers noted that she was very timid and withdrawn, carrying the weight of a difficult childhood. But after just a few months in a secure, supportive environment with regular meals, electricity, and caring adults, she began to blossom.

Today, she is gaining immense confidence. She smiles, talks freely with her peers, and is genuinely enjoying the classroom experience.

Dreaming of a future in the classroom

Now that her safety is guaranteed and her education is funded, Hirah is looking forward to her future. Having experienced firsthand how a supportive learning environment can transform a life, she hopes to pay it forward by becoming a teacher one day.

“I want to thank my sponsors for considering me. I love my new school, Namatumba Junior School. I am happy here and learning a lot of things. I would like to be a teacher in the future.”
