Meet Simon: How Your Support Turned a $54 Loan into a Sack Tomato Harvest

Because of you, Simon pioneered modern vertical sack tomato farming to secure his family's economic future.

Hello! My name is Simon. I am a proud graduate of the Global Village Connect Community Development Program, and I want to share how local knowledge and a bit of innovation can open completely new horizons.

In my community, I noticed a very clear market gap: tomatoes were always in high demand, yet no one around us was actively planting them. Almost all of our local tomatoes had to be transported from distant markets, driving up prices.

That is when I saw a brilliant business opportunity: I would become a tomato farmer!

Drawing inspiration from modern methods

I wanted to do things differently. One day, while scrolling through social media, I came across an educational video where someone was explaining a modern vertical tomato farming method using bags or sacks, outlining its many agricultural benefits. Vertical sack farming maximizes space, retains moisture exceptionally well, and prevents soil borne diseases.

I felt so incredibly inspired by this agricultural innovation that I decided to give it a try on my own land.

To kickstart my business idea, I borrowed $54 from a local GVC supported savings group. With this starting capital, I purchased high quality tomato seedlings and durable sacks.

I carefully prepared a specialized nursery bed to nurture the young plants. Meanwhile, I filled the heavy sacks with a rich mixture of compost and topsoil. When the seedlings were strong and ready for transplanting, I carefully transferred them into the sacks, lining them up neatly in my garden.

Diligent care and a promising future

Farming requires immense dedication. I water my tomatoes every single day and give them the best possible care I can manage. I am doing everything possible to ensure an excellent harvest, because I believe deeply in this innovative project and the community development training principles that guided me.

My hard work is already paying off, and the plants are growing exceptionally well. I expect to make a net profit of $383 when the tomatoes are ready for sale in the upcoming weeks.

Because vertical sack farming allows for year round cultivation, I plan to achieve three successful harvests a year. This will generate an annual profit of over $1,100, an incredible sum that will fully help me take comfortable care of all of my family’s needs and secure my children’s education.

Nurturing a better tomorrow

By combining the financial record keeping and market analysis skills I learned through GVC Community Development Program with modern vertical farming methods, I have transitioned from a struggling neighbor into a successful agricultural pioneer.

“Thank you, Global Village Connect, for equipping me and helping me move towards a better future! Your training gave me the confidence to spot opportunities and the skills to turn them into reality.”
