Meet Muhammed: How Your Scholarship Opened a Path to Medical School for a Top Student

Because of your support, Muhammed received a secondary scholarship and is now a top student in Kisiki College, aiming for medical school.

Muhammed Wakalda suffered a tragic loss when his mother passed away when he was just five years old. When his father subsequently found himself unable to care for Muhammed and his siblings, they moved in with their grandmother.

Altogether, his grandmother took on the immense responsibility of caring for fifteen of Muhammed’s cousins and siblings under one crowded, resource strained roof. Without money for school fees or basic learning supplies, Muhammed’s academic future was highly uncertain.

Catching the Headmaster’s eye

A bright, focused, and incredibly determined student, Muhammed refused to let his circumstances limit him. His focus in the classroom caught the attention of the Headmaster at Tikkun Olam Primary School, who recognized his academic potential and recommended him for a Global Village Connect scholarship.

Thanks to GVC and the generosity of our dedicated donor, Toni, Muhammed was given the life changing opportunity to continue his education.

Toni did far more than support Muhammed financially from across the world; she traveled to Uganda on one of GVC’s community connection trips to meet him in person, deepening a powerful bond that continues to inspire him.

“I foresee a bright future for me. If I work hard, I can be anything! But my goal is to get into medical school in Uganda. I would like to become a pediatrician!”

— Muhammed Wakalda

Excelling in high school and football

Today, Muhammed is thriving in high school and has established himself among the top academic performers in his entire class. His teachers are highly impressed by his dedication and have exceptionally high hopes for his performance in the upcoming 2025 national examinations.

Beyond his stellar academic achievements, school has given Muhammed a safe space to grow, make friends, and thrive in extracurricular activities, including playing as a key member of the school’s football (soccer) team.

A holistic approach to education

At Global Village Connect, we do more than simply provide tuition assistance. We offer holistic, ongoing support, constantly checking in with our students and helping them overcome systemic challenges when their families cannot.

Most GVC students come from homes where graduating beyond the sixth grade is exceedingly rare. For many young scholars like Muhammed, a scholarship is their only opportunity to break the cycle of poverty and build a bright, impactful future.
