Meet Loyce: How Your Support Helped a Mother Turn an Anthill into a Brick Business

Because of your support, Loyce launched a brick-laying business using clay from her own land, producing 15,000 bricks to pay school fees.

Hello, my name is Logose Loyce!

I am a graduate of the Global Village Connect Community Development Program.

My business is selling bricks. I was very scared to start a business because I didn’t have any money. I was afraid of what people would say if I started something very small, so I kept putting it off for a very long time.

During GVC’s Community Development Program, we learned about the reasons that stop people from getting out of their comfort zones. Two reasons seemed to describe me perfectly: fear and procrastination.

Discovering the power of dormant resources

The training taught me that I could start a business even without money. Instead, I could use the “dormant resources” around me. This single lesson gave me the encouragement I needed to start my brick laying business. I put my fear aside, and stopped procrastinating.

I had a large, clay rich anthill on my land. I asked my sons to help me dig it and make bricks. We worked hard together, and after molding, drying, and burning, we had successfully made 15,000 strong bricks.

Funding education in bulk

In June, we sold our first batch of 10,000 bricks for $223. I used this income to pay for my children’s school fees, I have children in primary school and one taking a specialized course at a post secondary institute.

In September, I sold the remaining 5,000 bricks for $113 and was able to easily afford their school fees for the third term.

I love this business, because I can sell bricks in bulk and earn enough money to take care of demands like school fees which require a large sum of money at once.

Looking to the future

My future goal is to be able to operate a dry foods business that can bring in daily income, because bricks take about two months to be ready for sale. But for now, my brick laying business has proven that my fears were holding me back from what was already possible.
